Most of the self-defense guides out there are written by professionals. Their relationship with crime and violence often results in information that's deeply frightening, and solutions that many civilians might be uncomfortable with. Their frame of reference is simply not the same as yours and mine.
Marc Macyoung grew up in a life of violence, and lived long enough to learn from the mistakes he made, ultimately making a career out of writing, teaching and testifying about how violence and violent crime play out in the world.
His most recent book, "Self Defense Doesn't Have to Be Scary" is his attempt to fix the problem I just mentioned. In this two-part conversation, Marc addresses the most important things regular people and parents don't know about self-defense, how we can learn them, and the best ways to apply them in our busy, daily, kid-distracted lives.
